What Does the Medulawi Foundation do?
Medulawi is a Dutch charity, which aims to improve Medical care and Education for children in Malawi. In order to achieve its mission, Medulawi Foundation provides funding for:
- School fees and further professional education for children whose families are unable to pay.
- Hiring of additional medical personnel in existing hospitals.
- Materials to further equip hospitals or schools
Malawi is the poorest civil-war-free country in the world. Over 65% of the population lives below the poverty line. The average life expectancy is 54 years due to the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS. Out of the 16,7 million inhabitants, 2 million are orphans who have usually lost their parents because of HIV/AIDS.
40% of the population in Malawi can't read or write. Primary school is free of charge a few years ago. However, secondary school still requires school fees, so only the privileged few currently attend. This lack of nation wide education is one of the main reasons why poverty in Malawi continues. Medulawi wants to break this vicious cycle by funding secondary education as well as further professional education (at existing schools) for motivated children who would otherwise not be able to pay their fees.
Although significant effort is being done to bring it down, child mortality in Malawi is still at a very high level; 8.3% of children dy before the age of five. Shortage of medical staff in hospitals is a significant problem. A ratio of 1 nurse to 100 children is not an exception, which leads to many children dying unnecessarily. Medulawi finances additional personnel in existing hospitals, and also supports these hospitals with equipment and/or medication.
